Full vellum with flaps and gutters, smooth spine decorated with gilt fleurons Superb engraved illustration by Crispin Van de Passe, including 4 portraits of Louis XIII, Roger de Bellegarde, Pluvinel and Menou, and 57 double-page plates showing airs of merry-go-rounds, jousts and bits. (some restorations and rare interior foxing). Provenance: - Private collection of Mario LURASCHI Antoine de Pluvinel, first ordinary equerry of kings Henry III and Henry IV, founded at the end of the 16th century an equestrian academy intended to perfect the French nobility in "the exercise of riding". Following the example of fencers and musicians, he took advantage of the Italomania of his time and introduced to France the equestrian methods of the peninsula, methods that he continued to perfect.
