[RIDING] NEWCASTLE Guillaume de Method... - Lot 259 - Actéon - Compiègne Enchères
[RIDING] NEWCASTLE Guillaume de Method and new invention of training horses. London, Jean Brindley, 1737. Large folio volume, double-page frontispiece, [6] ff, 236 pp, 39 double plates. Bound in old style with highly ornate seven-ribbed spine, headpieces worn, nerves a little rubbed, wear to corners. Double-page intaglio engraved title-frontispiece with the address and date of the original edition, numerous woodcut sketches in the text and 42 double-page copper-engraved plates after drawings by Abraham van Diepenbeck. For Mennessier de La Lance these engravings "have a real artistic value. The backgrounds, landscapes, cartouches and ornaments are particularly well treated" (II, 247). Second edition more beautiful than the first of 1657. The printing is as fine here as in the first edition, the limited edition of the latter having not fatigued the copperplates; the paper and printing are here far superior. (Missing three plates, a few rare stains on some pages of text) Provenance : - Private collection of Mario LURASCHI
